Box upgrades¶
Upgrades are special panels that take the place of any Box Panel in the shell, so the Box still passes its check. Most are made from a Box Panel and the residue of one kind of world (see the Separator), and several have a cheaper bootleg version found in other worlds, which works most of the time.
The Box Door's controller lists the upgrades your Box has.
box-upgradedViewing Port¶
A Hush Glass window. Watch the Corridor shimmer in while the Box fades out.
Bootleg: cracked glass. What shimmers through it is usually the Corridor.
Box Lamp¶
A warm lamp for the pitch-dark inside of the Box.
Bootleg: a lamp, most of the time. It buzzes.
Quick Seal¶
Seals the Box fast: the fade into the Corridor takes two seconds instead of five.
Bootleg: seals very fast. Sometimes so fast you arrive upside down.
Destination Memory¶
Bookmarks up to eight worlds you have reached. Anchor one and the Box sets you down in the Corridor right by its door, no walking needed.
Bootleg: bookmarks eight worlds too, but its sense of direction is approximate.
Registration Plate¶
Your Box's number in brass, bolted on from outside. Port Threshold's clamps land a plated Box on its own pad.
Forged: a number nobody issued, in convincing brass. Port Threshold's inspectors check plates now and then.
Tuning Console¶
Tune it by using a residue on it. Each trip then burns one residue of that kind from your inventory and sets you down by a door to a world of that kind, one you have not seen if any is near.
Reinforced Box Panel¶
Meteoric Iron over lead. Nobody inside the Box takes fire or blast damage, and the flames go out when you step in.
Box Trim¶
An inlaid band in one kind of world's colours, earned by logging every specimen set of that kind.
