What happens when you arrive

The Box stands in a gentle green country of birch woods and flowers, under a dusk that never ends. Look west and the sun hangs low over a bleached desert. Look east and there are only stars over snow. This world always shows its sun the same face, and the only place anything grows is the band of twilight between the two. Walk west and the sun climbs to noon. Walk east and it sinks until only the stars are left.

The rule: endless day, endless night

The world is split into three strips running north to south:

Zone Where What it's like
The day side West of the band. A bleached desert under a noon that never moves.
The twilight band About 96 blocks either side of the Box's line, its edge wandering by up to 24 blocks like a coastline. Green, gentle, perpetual dusk. Birch woods, flowers, farm animals.
The night side East of the band. Snow under endless midnight.

The sky follows you: wherever you stand, the time of day is set by how far west or east you are, and no clock runs.

Danger What it does How to deal with it
The day side sun 1 damage every 2 seconds while you're under the open sky west of the band. Cross from shade to shade, swim, or drink a Potion of Fire Resistance. Water protects you.
The night side cold You slowly freeze, like standing in powder snow, and then take freezing damage. Stay within 3 blocks of a bright light (a torch, a campfire, lava), or wear any piece of leather armor.
Husks The day side's monsters, in numbers. The usual.
Strays The night side's monsters, in packs of 2 to 4, with the odd zombie. Polar bears roam too. The usual.

The twilight band has the ordinary mix of Overworld animals and monsters. There are no phantoms anywhere.

The signature resource: Dusk Bloom

The Dusk Bloom is a violet flower that grows only in the twilight band. It breaks by hand like any flower, and it is this world's Serum ingredient. Pale Lotus and Somnium Caps grow in the band too, so you can gather a whole Serum's worth of plants here.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Dusk Bloom The twilight band. Serum active, and a pretty flower.
Pale Lotus and Somnium Cap The twilight band. The rest of the Serum chain.
Ordinary ores Under all three zones. The stone is normal underneath.
Desert finds The day side. Fossils and desert plants.
Blue ice The night side. Packed in the snow.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Dusk Bloom. It replaces Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer. It grows only in the twilight band, close to the Box.

Tips

  • Stay in the band unless you need something from the edges. It is safe, green and full of food.
  • Wear leather boots before you go east. Any single piece of leather armor stops the cold.
  • On the day side, drink at every oasis: standing in water stops the burn.
  • Watch the sky. When the sun starts climbing or the stars come out, you've left the band.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

The sun here does not move; walk west and it climbs to noon, walk east and it sinks until only the stars are left. The weathered Box stands in the dusk between, the only country where anything grows, and the violet flowers that open there will stand in for the somnium in the Serum. On the day side the open sky burns, so I crossed it from shade to shade and drank at every oasis. On the night side the cold gets into you unless a torch or a campfire is close, or you wear leather; my boots saved my life. Lotus and caps grow in the dusk band as well, and when you are done, walk back to the Box with the Serum still in you and shut the door.
