What happens when you arrive

You step out onto the hangar deck of the Drydock, in a harbour city that lives behind a forty-block Seawall. Four hundred blocks out to sea is the Trench, and every few days something huge climbs out of it. The city keeps exactly one weapon against them: a twenty-four-block-tall mech called the Bulwark, standing in the cradle right next to you. Nobody else is going to pilot it.

Your quest: Hold the Line

The quest tracker walks you through it. Each step unlocks the next.

Step What to do
1 Look over the Bulwark at the bay console beside the cradle.
2 Climb the gantry ladder west of the cradle and board the Bulwark.
3 Walk the Bulwark out of the hangar door and through the Sally Port to the beach.
4 Bring down a kaiju before it reaches the city. Listen for the siren.
5 Take the bone and hide off the carcass to the Bone Dealer, under the ribs in the market.
6 Bring down two Category IV kaiju, so the chief will send a mech into the Trench.
7 Arm the reactor at the bay console, then walk the Bulwark out to sea and over the Trench's lip.

See the Bulwark and the kaiju

Here are the Bulwark and all nine kaiju as the game draws them. On the Bulwark, try the paint schemes and fit the weapons and parts the bay console sells (see Upgrading the Bulwark); each part's description is the one the console gives. On a kaiju, see its size next to you and its real numbers, and make it roar to light up its Rift Blue.

Piloting the Bulwark

Screenshot comingbreach-boarding
The Bulwark kneeling, its hand lowered to lift the player up to the visor

Right-click the mech and it kneels, lowers its hand, lifts you to its head and sets you in at the visor. A sync bar fills and the mech wakes at half. Shift climbs out at its foot.

Control Does
Mouse Steer, like a shooter: the legs turn to follow your look.
W A S D Walk and side-step.
Sprint Boost (spends the boost meter).
Space Jump-jets.
Attack / Use Fire the left and right arm weapons.
Mod keys (see Controls) Fire the shoulder weapons, spend overdrive.
C Brace for a hit.

Street clutter goes under your feet; whole buildings only go if you sprint or jet-lunge into them. Walk hard into the Seawall and the Bulwark climbs it hand over hand onto the top. Your co-pilot calls out what is happening.

The siren and the kaiju

Every few in-game days the siren goes up. A title names the contact's category, the lamps along the Seawall turn red, and a bar shows the contact being tracked in from the Trench. When the bar runs out, a kaiju rises in the shallows. The very first alert is a drill.

There are nine kinds, graded by size:

Category Kaiju
I Squall
II Barnacle, Riptide
III Undertow, Tempest, Tremor
IV Maelstrom, Breaker, Thunderhead

Each one gets over the Seawall its own way, then heads for the Bulwark or anything else worth smashing. Each has a claw and two special moves of its own. Your compass always shows where every kaiju is.

Meet it on the beach

Get out through the Sally Port before the bar runs out. A fight on the sand costs the city nothing; a fight in the streets knocks buildings down (the repair crews in hi-vis fix them the next day, but it is still your mess).

After the kill: harvesting the carcass

A dead kaiju falls on its side and stays for three in-game days, bleeding glowing Rift Blue. Right-click anywhere on the body to open the harvest bench. Every carcass has three stages, paying hide, bone and a Rift Gland. Each stage is a short mouse minigame graded A to D, and the grade decides the pay.

  • Without a Flensing Kit on your hotbar, the best grade you can get is C. Buy one from the Bone Dealer.
  • Once the carcass is picked clean, use a glass bottle on the pooled blood to fill a Bottle of Rift Blue Blood.

The Bone Market

The Bone Dealer keeps a stall under the ribs in the market and restocks every morning.

You give You get
1 Kaiju Bone 2 Emeralds
2 Kaiju Hide 3 Harbour Rations
1 Rift Gland 6 Emeralds
2 Bottle of Rift Blue Blood 1 Emerald
3 Rift Blue Shards 1 Kaiju Bone
4 Rift Blue Shards 1 Kaiju Hide
1 Emerald 1 Harbour Ration
5 Emeralds 1 Distilled Rift Blue
2 Emeralds 1 Flensing Kit
10 Kaiju Hide + 4 Distilled Rift Blue 1 Rift Cannon Core
8 Kaiju Bone + 2 Distilled Rift Blue 1 Chain Blade

Upgrading the Bulwark

At the bay console in the Drydock you buy and fit weapons, frame parts, plating and paint for the Bulwark, paid in bone, hide and Rift Blue. The big weapons are built round the cores the Bone Dealer winds: the Rift Cannon around a Rift Cannon Core, the arm saw around a Chain Blade.

The ending: the Trench run

Once two Category IV kaiju are down, the chief offers the run. Arm the reactor at the bay console (this opens the Sally Port), walk the Bulwark out to sea to the lip of the Trench, and go over. At the bottom you make a choice: close the Breach, or come back up.

What happens after (spoilers)

Closing the Breach ends the threat: the Bulwark stays down there, and its cradle holds a monument with a plaque. But after some quiet days the Trench stirs again, a second Bulwark is stood in the cradle with everything you had already paid for, and the siren starts over.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Distilled Rift Blue. It runs the Cryo Stabilizer without ice. Make it from four Rift Blue Shards (the glowing crust on the beach), or buy it from the Bone Dealer for five emeralds.

Tips

  • The coast's walls and buildings can't be broken by you (only by kaiju), so don't bother digging.
  • A Flensing Kit pays for itself on the first carcass.
  • Nothing spawns naturally here: the only monsters are the ones from the Trench.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

The Box came down inside a hangar. Steel floor, lines painted on it, a cradle at one end big enough to park a ship in, standing empty, with clamps the size of my Box hanging open on the pillars. Nobody's here. There's a wall outside you can't see the top of without leaning back, and the whole city is turned away from the sea like it's expecting something. The lamps on the wall went red while I was up there and a siren went and I nearly fell off; the board said DRILL. I'm not sure that's better. The blue stuff on the beach is sharp and it hums. I took some.
