Whatever breaks here mends itself. Once, so does whatever dies.

What happens when you arrive

A birch-pale country lies under a violet dusk that never deepens. The light never changes: it is always the moment after sunset. It looks peaceful, and for a while it is. Then you break a stone, turn round half a minute later, and it is back where it was. Time runs backwards here, toward how things were.

The rule: things mend themselves

What happens Exactly how What it means for you
Broken blocks come back Anything you break reassembles 30 seconds later, along with whatever the break knocked off around it. A chest comes back empty (its contents spilled when it broke and stay yours). Tunnels close behind you. Dig a shelter and you may have to dig your way out of it.
What you mine, you keep The drops are never taken back, even as the stone grows back. Every ore vein can be mined, and mined again.
Creatures die twice The first blow that would kill a creature instead sends it back to where it stood 5 seconds earlier, at full health, and leaves a Rewind Shard where it would have died. The second death is real. Every fight is twice as long. A skeleton you "killed" is suddenly back at the tree line, aiming.

A few details worth knowing:

  • A spot you have filled with another block in the meantime stays filled. A spot a creature is standing in waits until it moves.
  • Armour counts: the blow is judged before armour, so an armoured mob may rewind on a hit that would not quite have killed it.
  • The void and /kill are never undone.
  • Your arrival Box is never touched.
  • You don't rewind. Only creatures do.

What lives here

Rabbits and sheep; zombies, skeletons, spiders and the odd enderman. Because it is always dusk, zombies and skeletons never burn. There are no creepers and no phantoms.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Rewind Shard Left behind by every creature the first time it "dies": a splinter of the moment it did not. Sheep and rabbits count too. The native Serum active.
Ores The usual Overworld ores. Mine a vein, wait thirty seconds, mine it again.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Rewind Shard. It takes the place of Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer. Hit any creature once to the death and the shard is yours, even if you let it go after.

Tips

  • Don't build anything you need to last. A wall you break to put a door in comes back.
  • Fight with your back to something: a rewound mob reappears where it stood five seconds ago, which may be behind you.
  • Hunt the rabbits and sheep for shards. They rewind just like monsters and don't fight back.
  • Mine ore you can see from a safe spot, step back, and come back for it in thirty seconds.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

Nothing here stays broken. I dug a shelter into a hillside, and while I sat in it the tunnel behind me closed, every stone back where it had been, and I had to dig my way out again. The creatures are the same, once: I put a skeleton down and it was standing at the tree line a breath later, whole, aiming, with a sliver of glassy light lying where it fell. Strike it again and it stays down. The slivers are the moment it did not die, and the Synthesizer takes them in place of the powder. What you mine you keep, though the stone grows back; build nothing you need to last. Go back to the weathered Box while the dusk holds, keep the Serum in you, and shut the door.
