What happens when you arrive

You step out onto an island made of treasure: gold coins heaped into dunes, goblets and gold bars lying loose, emerald crystals pushing up through it all, and red treasure chests standing everywhere you look. A sea of lava surrounds it. Gold dust hangs in the amber air. Then a title tells you the bad news: "The hoard is tearing open." You have five minutes to grab what you can and be back inside the Box.

A pirate in a long coat is already walking over to you. Listen to him.

The rule: five minutes, then the ground is gone

Danger What it does How to deal with it
The countdown Starts the moment you first arrive and runs 5 minutes, even if you log out. Your action bar shows the time left every minute, then every second for the last ten. Keep an eye on it. Plan to be in the Box with time to spare.
Rifts The island tears open from its edge inward, toward the Box. A message tells you which way the ground just split. Work the side of the island nearest the Box as the end gets close.
Shaking ground Ground about to fall shakes for 1 to 5 seconds first. The moment the ground under you shakes, get off it.
The molten core Below the island is lava. Falling in kills you outright, fire resistance or not, and anything that falls in burns up. Don't count on potions. Stay off the edges.
The end A few seconds after the countdown, anyone outside the arrival Box dies with the world. Be inside the Box. The Box never falls, even when the ground under it is gone.

There are no monsters and nothing to eat here. Beds don't work.

You only get one visit

Once the countdown ends, or once everyone in your party has left, Hoardfall's door in the Corridor stays shut for good ("The door will not open. The world behind it has fallen into its own core."). If a friend is still inside, a party member who left early can still go back through the door for them.

Silas Rook and the crew of the Ember Gull

Silas Rook, first mate of the pirate ship Ember Gull, meets you on your first visit. He tells you what is going on ("When the ground starts a-shakin', it's about to fall, so get off it sharp") and hands you 5 Lockpicks.

Four of the six crew are still here, standing near the Box and shouting what they see as the collapse spreads. Right-click one and they introduce themselves.

Pirate Who they are
Captain Ysolde Varr Came for one chest. Her ship is already down a crack.
Bosun Krag Four arms, four chests, very few words.
Skerrit The gunner. Keep away from the powder.
Mother Gullet The ship's cook. Calls you "dearie".
Pockets The rigging climber who saw the first crack from the crow's nest.
Old Brassbones Ninety-year-old navigator, half of him brass. "Old Brassbones goes down with the hoard."

Picking the locks

14 treasure chests appear around you when you arrive, between 6 and 36 blocks away, and one or two more turn up around you every 15 seconds until the last minute. Every one the hoard sets out is locked. Right-click one with a lockpick in your inventory to open the lockpicking screen.

  • The lock has 3 to 5 pins. A needle sweeps back and forth across a gauge; stop it inside the gold zone to set the pin. Each pin's zone is narrower and its needle faster than the last.
  • A clean pick costs nothing. A miss drops every pin, jams the pick for a second, and snaps one lockpick.
  • When all pins are set the lid swings open for good.
  • A locked chest can't be broken open, and if the ground under it falls, it takes its loot with it.

Each chest rolls its loot from one of the richest chests in the game: buried treasure, a shipwreck's treasure chest, a desert pyramid, a bastion's treasure room, an End city, or a woodland mansion.

Loose treasure

Everything lying on the gold can be picked up, and it is worth taking even without the chests. Heaps come one to three piles high and give that many times the loot.

Treasure Breaks into
Heap of Gold Coins 3 Gold Coins per pile (sometimes a spare Lockpick)
Heap of Iron Coins 3 Iron Coins per pile (sometimes a spare lockpick)
Heap of Cut Emeralds 2 Emerald Chips and 1 gold coin per pile
Jeweled Goblet 4 gold coins and 2 emerald chips
Stacked Gold Bars 3 Gold Ingots
Emerald Crystal 3 to 5 emerald chips (more with Fortune)

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • There is no native Serum stand-in.
  • Getting home is the whole game: be inside the Box when the clock runs out. If you came in with a sliding remote, it lights up 20 seconds before the end, just enough time to slide out.

Tips

  • Grab the Stacked Gold Bars and Emerald Crystals first: they are the most value per swing.
  • Don't chase the last chest. The ground near the end has "eaten better than you", as Old Brassbones says.
  • Practise the lock calmly on the first chest. A clean pick costs nothing, so speed matters less than not slipping.
  • Clear inventory space before you come. Coins stack, but you will want room for whole chests of loot.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

This is a treasure world, and it is dying. The hoard is tearing open over its molten core. The chests are real and the coins craft back into ingots: grab what you can, but watch the rifts and the clock. In about five minutes the ground is gone, and under it there is only fire. The Box will not fall. Be inside it.
