Upside¶
Strange physics
The ground hangs overhead from a bedrock sky, and everything you let go of falls up to it.

upside-arrivalWhat happens when you arrive¶
The Box hangs from the underside of the land like a lantern from a beam. You step out, and the ground is over your head, with your boots pressed against it. This is the Overworld turned upside down. The land hangs from a bedrock sky, and below it there is only a pale haze and no ground at all. Everything here falls up, gently, toward the rock.
The rule: gravity points up¶
| What changes | How it feels |
|---|---|
| Gravity | Pulls you up toward the hanging ground, at 40% of home's strength. |
| Jumping | Flings you "down" toward the haze, until the pull draws you back. It's a big, floaty arc. |
| Falls | Slow, but a long one still hurts when you hit the ground overhead. |
| Dropped items | Drift up and settle against the rock. |
| Arrows, experience orbs, falling blocks, TNT | Still fall the old way: down, into the void. |
What the land is like¶
- Dry. There is no water and no lava anywhere: every sea, river and lake hangs as an empty hollow, because a fluid would pour into the void. No rain falls either.
- Grey and stony. Little colour survived the upturn: grey grass, grey leaves.
- Deep stone is near the roof. The bedrock floor of the Overworld is now the sky. Deepslate and the darker ores lie up against it, while the grass hangs at the bottom.
- Tall mountains are cut off. Peaks that would rise above the world's height hang down to the bottom as flat-ended pillars.
- Ores work as normal. Coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond veins are all there, plus the usual granite, diorite, andesite and gravel.
upside-pillarWhat lives here¶
Nothing. No monsters, by the world's own rule, and no animals either. It is perfectly safe apart from the drop.
What to bring home¶
There's nothing unique to this world, but it is a peaceful place to mine. The ores lie at their usual heights, only upside down, and nothing comes out of the dark to bother you.
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 3 Serum Ampoules.
- There is no native Serum ingredient.
- Bring food. With no animals and no farmland water, there's nothing to eat here.
Tips¶
- Think of the void as the real danger. Build a railing or a ledge before you dig sideways near an edge.
- Practise a few small jumps near the Box first. The arc is long, and "down" is the void.
- Tools you drop are safe: they drift up and settle against the rock. Arrows you shoot are not.
Birds¶
Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.
- Dropwing Lark: common
- Ballast Albatross: rare
The traveler's tape¶
Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.
Read the journal (spoilers)
The weathered Box hangs from the underside of the land like a lantern from a beam, and when you step out of it the ground is over your head and your boots are pressed against it. Everything here falls up, gently, at less than half the pull of home: dropped tools drift up and settle against the rock, and a jump flings you down toward the haze until the pull draws you back. I never found the bottom of that haze and I would not go looking, for below the hanging land there is no ground at all. Nothing hunts here and nothing flows; the seas and rivers hang empty, and the deep stone with its darker ores lies up against the bedrock roof. When you have seen enough of the world from beneath, float back up into the Box with the Serum still in you and shut the door.
