A summer-evening meadow frozen solid: a cow mid-step, a rockslide of grey debris hanging in the air over the grass

What happens when you arrive

You walk out into a summer evening that has stopped. A cow stands with one hoof raised. A rockslide hangs in the air over the meadow, every stone pinned in place. There is no wind and no birdsong, only your own footsteps. Nothing moves but you. For now. Every ten minutes, everything resumes at once for half a minute, and then stops again.

The rule: time is stopped (mostly)

Phase How long What happens
Still 10 minutes Every creature is frozen exactly where it was: animals, monsters, even arrows in flight. You move freely.
Warnings During the stillness "Time resumes in ..." at 5 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute and 30 seconds left, then a count every second for the last 10 seconds.
Running 30 seconds "Everything moves at once." Animals walk on, monsters you crept past turn round, and the hanging rock near you falls.
Then "Time stops." And the cycle starts over.

Only creatures are held. You, dropped items and experience always move. Crops, furnaces and flowing water keep running as normal.

Blows land late

Hit a frozen creature and nothing happens yet. Every blow you strike is kept and added up, and they all land together the moment time runs again. A zombie you hit ten times while it stood still takes all ten hits at once.

Danger What it does How to deal with it
Monsters Zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers stand frozen wherever they were when time stopped. When time resumes they carry on, and they may be right next to you. Before the count runs out, back well away from anything hostile, or stack enough blows on it to finish it when time returns.
Stilled Debris Rock hanging in mid-fall. When time runs, every hanging block near a player with nothing under it falls at once and hurts whatever it lands on. Never stand under the debris when the count runs out.
Frozen arrows A skeleton's arrow hangs in the air where it was when time stopped, and flies on when time resumes. Step out of its line.

Debris out of every player's sight keeps hanging, so the sky over the far side of the world is still full of rock when you get there.

Use the stillness

The journal's writer used the stacked blows to clear monsters, and nearly died because the rock came down at the same moment. Do your hitting early in the stillness, then find open sky before the countdown.

What lives here

Cows, sheep and chickens in the meadows; zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers anywhere dark. It is always just before sunset here.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Stilled Debris Hanging in clouds 8 to 16 blocks over the land. Needs a pickaxe; take it whole with Silk Touch. Builds that float with no support.
Stasis Shard Break Stilled Debris without Silk Touch: 1 or 2 shards, more with Fortune. The Serum stand-in (below).

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 3 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: the Stasis Shard. The cold shards keep anything cold: right-click one into the Cryo Stabilizer and it runs without ice.

Tips

  • Watch the action bar. The 30-second warning is your cue to get out from under any rock.
  • Use the still phase to mine debris. A pillar of dirt gets you up to it easily.
  • Freeze-tag a creeper: hit it a few times while still, then walk away. It takes the damage when time resumes.
  • Ten minutes is a long time. Explore freely between the running phases, but always know where open sky is.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

I walked out into an evening that had stopped. A cow with one hoof raised, a falling leaf pinned in the air, a rockslide hanging over the meadow as if someone had paused it. It holds for about ten minutes. Then everything happens at once for half a minute, and stops again. Whatever I hit while it was still felt nothing, and then felt all of it together when time came back; I used that, and I nearly died of it, because the rock came down at the same moment. Count the warnings, and never stand under the debris when the count runs out. The hanging rock breaks into cold shards that keep anything cold, and the Cryo Stabilizer takes them in place of ice.
