Building the Box

The Box is a hollow steel cube, five blocks on every side, around an empty room three blocks on every side. It can stand anywhere. The first Box you cross from becomes your home Box for good: the Corridor's home door always leads back to it, so build it somewhere you want to come home to.

What it takes

95 Box Panels, 1 Box Door and 1 Coherence Core. Each panel recipe makes eight, so twelve crafts cover the shell: 48 Tesseract Ingots, 48 Lead Plates and 12 Hush Glass.

The shape

Build it one layer at a time, from the floor up.

Layer 1: the floor
Layer 2: door (lower half)
Layer 3: door (upper half)
Layer 4
Layer 5: the roof

  • The floor, the roof and all four walls are Box Panels.
  • The Box Door stands in the middle of one wall, both halves of it, with its lower half level with the floor of the room.
  • The Coherence Core takes the place of the middle floor panel. You stand on it when you cross.
  • The 27 blocks of the room stay clear. Torches, carpets and anything else you can walk through are fine.

Placing the door from inside or from outside both work. In worlds where up is down, a Box hung upside down from its roof, with the Core in the middle of the roof, works too.

Checking your work

Sneak and use the Box Door with an empty hand to open its controller. It shows whether the structure is sound, whether the Core is in place and whether the Box is sealed, and it names the first problem it finds, with the position of a missing panel or a block in the way. Closing the door on an unfinished Box tells you the same.

Common mistakes

  • A block left inside the room. Even a single stray block in the 3x3x3 room fails the check.
  • The door one block too high. Its lower half sits level with the room's floor, which is one block above the bottom of the Box.
  • A panel where the Core goes. The Core replaces the centre floor panel; it does not sit on top of it.

Make it yours

Upgrade panels replace any Box Panel in the shell: a window to watch the Corridor shimmer in, a lamp for the pitch dark inside, a faster seal, a memory of the worlds you have visited. See Box upgrades.
