Plenty¶
Reflections of home
Home, street for street, except every building is gold and diamond and everyone is rich and happy to share.

plenty-streetWhat happens when you arrive¶
It is home: the same corner, the same streets, the same buildings, and somebody has paid for all of it. The sidewalks are polished emerald with lapis lines down the road, the streetlights are gold, every window is diamond. The people are the people you know, every one of them, in furs and gold chains, laughing. The first one to pass you presses three diamonds into your hand "for the trip". Somewhere above, a band is playing and a cork pops.
The rule: home, made of treasure¶
Plenty is a copy of your own home world, kept up to date: the city slice, and whatever you have built at home, street for street. On the way over every block is re-made in something precious:
| At home | In Plenty |
|---|---|
| Stone and brick | Gilded Brick |
| Limestone and terracotta | Gilded Marble |
| Glass | Diamond Glass |
| Steel and concrete | Polished Iron |
| Sidewalks and roads | Emerald Paving with lapis lane lines |
| Roofs | Gold Roof Tiles |
| Wood | Gilded Hardwood |
| Streetlights, benches, hydrants, signals, bins | Their gilded twins |
| The L | Gold, on powered rails |
And the ground underneath is absurd: diamond, gold, iron, emerald and lapis shot through everything, ancient debris in the deep, gold veining the park lawns.
| More of Plenty | |
|---|---|
| Gold rain | When it rains, it rains gold nuggets around you under open sky. |
| Generous people | Every couple of minutes each resident tosses a handful of coins and gold at whoever is near. |
| No danger | Everyone is delighted to see you. |
plenty-lobbyThe two who aren't copies¶
Almost everyone here is a copy of someone at home. Two people are not:
- Dr. Iris Vale, a physicist, back of house at the Stevens, in the laundry, beside her still. Hand her four
crops (wheat, potatoes, carrots, beetroot, apples, melon slices, sweet berries, sugar cane, pumpkins or flowers)
in your main hand and she brews one
Grounded Somnium. - Rook, a traveler who came before you and never left, at a table in the Grill.
Ask whether anyone has ever left, and everyone else laughs and changes the subject. Vale and Rook talk around it too, at first.
Before you fill your pockets
Ask yourself why nobody here has ever left. Then read the spoiler below before carrying anything home.
The secret of Plenty (spoilers)
Nothing from Plenty works anywhere else. Everything born here (mined, dropped, gifted, traded, smelted, found in a chest) is phase-born, and so is anything crafted from it, anywhere. Inside Plenty that means nothing. Taken to any other world, it tears itself apart:
| Outside Plenty, a phase-born... | What happens |
|---|---|
| Block you place | Cracks, sparks and rattles for about four seconds, collapses, and detonates: it and every block within 1 of it are gone, with no drops. |
| Item you put in a chest, furnace, pot, frame, stand or jukebox | That block becomes the host and goes the same way, taking everything inside with it. |
| Armour, tool, weapon or wings you wear or hold | Shimmers after a second, then shatters after about four. |
| Item you drop | Shivers for three seconds, and a tiny black hole swallows it. |
What a detonation throws out can't be picked up: a small black hole opens and eats it all. A cracking block can't be mined to save it.
Nothing warns you the first time. When it happens, the screen shows "Phase rejection: Nothing from Plenty can exist here.", everything phase-born you own starts to shimmer and gets a tooltip line from then on, Rook's journal page opens on its own, and back in Plenty, Dr. Vale and Rook speak openly. The Mayor never learns.
Even Port Threshold's scanners confiscate matter from Plenty.
One way out: a player who touches a full-size black hole while it is open is pulled in, falls through it, and is thrown out in a random world, along with everything that hole ever swallowed, with Plenty's mark stripped off. Matter that has been through a black hole is nobody's any more.
What to bring home¶
What actually survives (spoilers)
- Nothing you got here, unless it went through a black hole.
- A clean
Grounded Somnium: Dr. Vale's brew is clean if every crop you gave her came from home. Bring
crops with you. Crops grown in Plenty make a phase-born vial. - What you brought with you stays yours.
Plenty is a perfect sandbox: build with gold and diamond to your heart's content, as long as you build here.
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
- Native stand-in:
Grounded Somnium. It takes the place of Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer. Dr. Vale
brews one from four crops; bring the crops from home.
Tips¶
- Pack a stack of wheat or carrots from home before your first visit. Dr. Vale's brew is your Serum here.
- Enjoy the gold rain and the diamonds, but keep your home gear on you and Plenty's in Plenty.
- Talk to Rook in the Grill. Whatever happened to them may happen to you.
Birds¶
Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.
- Gilded Pigeon: common
- Phase Magpie: rare

The traveler's tape¶
Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.
Read the journal (spoilers)
It is home, the same corner and the same tower, and somebody has paid for all of it. The sidewalk is polished emerald with lapis lines down the road, the streetlights are gold, every window is diamond, and the Stevens has a marble-and-gold lobby with a chandelier you could lose a week in. The people are the people I know, every one of them, in furs and gold chains, laughing, and the first one to pass me pressed three diamonds into my hand for the trip. The ground is absurd. Diamond in the curbs, gold in the lawns, emeralds growing on the roofs like moss. When it rains, it rains gold. I asked whether anyone had ever left, and every one of them laughed and changed the subject. There is a physicist back of house at the Stevens who brews a grounded Somnium from home crops, and a traveler in the Grill who came before me and never left. Nobody here has ever wanted for anything. When you have seen enough, step back into the Box with the Serum still in you and shut the door.
