laguna-seca-corkscrewWhat happens when you arrive¶
The arrival Box sets down in the paddock of a California road circuit on a hot summer afternoon. This is the real Laguna Seca, built a block to the metre from satellite and survey data: the front straight, the Andretti hairpin, the long climb up the Rahal straight to the Corkscrew's blind drop, then Rainey Curve and Turn 11 back to the line, all in dry golden hills with oak woods and a lake in the infield. It is always early afternoon and it never rains. There are no mobs at all. The thing that matters is the white Race Office next to you.
The rule: race day, every day¶
| What's different | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| The circuit is protected | You can't break anything on the track, its kerbs and verges, the run-off out to about 24 blocks from the racing line, or the paddock buildings. The marshals tell you so. Everything beyond that is open ground to build on. |
| No monsters, no animals | Nothing wanders onto the racing line. Bring your own food. |
| The sun never moves | Fixed at early afternoon. Beds don't work. |
| Ramps and banks | Jump Ramps and Side Banks can always be picked up, even inside the protected area. |
Racing for the trophy¶
There are two Race Entry Boards in the paddock: one by the Race Office door and one at the paddock's west edge, facing the front straight. Right-click a board to open sign-up.
- Sign-up lasts 20 seconds. Everyone in the world is told, and anyone can join by using a board too.
- The grid forms. Each entrant gets a race-prepped CBR1000RR Fireblade on loan, unfolded on their grid slot behind the line (your own bike, if you have one, stays where you left it). Rival Riders fill out the field to eight, with at least three of them however many players there are. Your grid slot is shuffled.
- Wait for the lights. About seven seconds after the bikes appear, the lights go out and you get GO! Move off your spot early and you get a 5 second jump-start penalty.
- Three laps. A bar at the top of the screen shows your lap, position and time, and you get your last lap time at each crossing.
laguna-seca-gridWhat counts¶
- Only distance ridden along the track counts. Cutting across the infield gets you nothing; stray more than about 28 blocks from the track and you are told you are off course until you come back.
- Fall off and stay off for 45 seconds, and you have retired.
- Once the first player crosses the line, everyone else has one minute to finish. A race is called off after 15 minutes no matter what.
The rivals are good. Each one rides the same bike you do, brakes for every corner in time, and takes the corners at 80 to 95 percent of the bike's limit. They can't be hurt, and a rival who gets stuck is put back on the track.
Results and prizes¶
When the race ends the results and the fastest lap are read out, the top three are put on the podium, and the loan bikes and rivals vanish. Players are paid by finishing position (rivals take nothing):
| Position | Prize |
|---|---|
| 1st | |
| 2nd | |
| 3rd | |
| 4th or 5th | 3 Emeralds |
| 6th and below | 1 Emerald |
| Retired | Nothing |
You can race as often as you like, one race at a time.
Riding the bike¶
| Control | Does |
|---|---|
| W | Throttle |
| S | Brakes (reverse when stopped) |
| A / D | Lean and steer |
| Space | Wheelie (with S held: stoppie) |
| Right-click | Drift |
| Trick key (see Controls) | Hop on the ground, throw a trick in the air |
| Shift | Get off |
It is an automatic six-speed, and every gear change spits flame. A trick that hasn't come round when you land, or a wall hit flat out, throws you off.
The stunt park¶
Next to the paddock is a little stunt park built from Jump Ramps and Side Banks. A Jump Ramp throws the bike into the air for tricks (Backflip, Barrel Roll, 360 Spin, Superman). A Side Bank is a kerb wedge the bike rides up without leaving the ground, so you can bank your own corners. Lay two wedges in a row facing the same way and the second becomes the top half, making a slope a full block high.
laguna-seca-stunt-parkWhat to bring home¶
Everything here is about building your own track at home. The trophies are display pieces.
Layers: three of Track Asphalt, Red Kerb, White Kerb or Grass Block in a row make six thin layers
(
Track Asphalt Layer,
Red Kerb Layer,
White Kerb Layer,
Verge Turf Layer). They stack like snow, an
eighth of a block at a time, and the bike rolls smoothly up and down them instead of hopping each step. Coal can be
swapped for charcoal, and any planks work for the board.
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
- There is no native Serum stand-in, and there is nothing to gather for one here, so bring your own.
Tips¶
- Ride a practice lap before you sign up: the Corkscrew is a blind drop off a crest, and the rivals already know it.
- Don't move until GO! A 5 second penalty is hard to win back in three laps.
- If you bail, get straight back on. You have 45 seconds before you are retired.
- Even a last place pays an emerald, so a few races cover your trip.
Birds¶
Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.
- Acorn Woodpecker: common
- Corkscrew Roadrunner: rare
