The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

It is home, every street of it, and there is nobody here. The lights are dead and half the windows are out. Grass has come up through the asphalt and there are saplings in the middle of the road, and the cars are parked where they stopped, some with the doors still open. Somebody wrote on a plywood board across a shop front: THE CURE WORKED. FOR A WEEK. In the doorway of an office lobby I heard breathing, a lot of it, slow and all together, from somewhere inside where it was dark. I did not go in. The sun is high and nothing has come out into it, and I think that is the rule here: the day is mine and the dark is theirs. I am not going to find out what happens at sundown. When I have seen enough, I will step back into the Box with the Serum still in me and shut the door, and I will do it well before dark.
